Week 5: Assignment #1

Howard Gardner, a professor of education at Harvard University, developed what is called the "theory of multiple intelligences". In his theory he proposed that there are actually eight different types of intelligence:
  • Linguistic intelligence
  • Logical-mathematical intelligence
  • Spatial intelligence
  • Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence
  • Musical intelligence
  • Interpersonal intelligence
  • Intrapersonal intelligence
  • Naturalist intelligence
Knowing this, a teacher can plan a lesson in a way that would hook and engage students whose strengths lay in a category of intelligence beyond linguistic, which is what teachers tend to focus mostly on. By allowing the students to approach a new topic or subject through something besides a textbook, for example, a song, video, or activity, a teacher can ensure that more students will remain engaged and do better because one or more areas of their strengths were activated. Additionally, interacting with new information through a variety of mediums has also proven to improve the probability of retaining that information, another advantage of incorporating the multiple intelligences in one's lessons.
