Week 4: Assignment #3
This article introduced me to a new program called SMILE that helps generate good critical thinking through using their database of questions and allowing the students and teachers to create new ones. I can definitely use this in my classroom to stimulate discussion, and to give my students the opportunity to come up with higher-order thinking questions on their own.
This program can be adapted to use with young children by showing them that every time an especially inquisitive question is asked, the teacher enters it into the database, and the class can discuss it and keep track of it. The teacher can also search the database for a similar question asked by someone else, and the class can discuss it as well. Children get excited when they know their work is recorded somewhere, and this can encourage them to think critically and their questions will lead to discussions about the topics the questions address.
