Backward Design

Backward design is all about designing our curriculum and instruction based on the outcomes we expect from our students. Many teachers design lesson plans by thinking about the content they want their students to walk away with. However, lesson planning should really revolve around goals that relate to students walking away with an understanding of the meaning and significance behind the content their taught, improving students' skills, and their ability to transfer what they gain to new areas.
Understanding the true goals for our students, the goals that go beyond just the content we plan to cover that year, will help inform and change the way we assess and instruct our students and it will transform the way we plan our lessons. Using backward design will ensure that the students remain motivated, intellectually engaged, and grow in their abilities and skills, and not just their knowledge.
